Consistency over Speed

I recalled setting a “very low bar” for myself back in January 2024: hitting 60 coaching hours by December 2024 and 100 coaching hours by June 2025. What I eventually achieved was 60 hours by October 2024, certified by Newfield by December 2024, 100 hours by April 2025, certified by ICF by April 2025.

It was “very low bar” because in total, it took me 15 months to achieve international certification. I probably spent 10 – 20% effort as work has been very demanding (and I enjoy the challenge :D).

As I reflect on my journey, I learn that being consistent is more valuable than being fast. I see this journey like a marathon. Key success factors? Setting a structure, keeping a rhythm, and having a target finished line.

Being able to earn the Associate Certified Coach (ACC badge) from International Coaching Federation (ICF) is a big deal for me. It comes with a sense of achievement.

By my “usual” standard, I would probably have expected me to complete 100 hours by December 2024 which I would not have achieved and I will feel low for not meeting the mark. However, because I am giving myself more space, I managed to be slightly ahead of my target date and I feel good. This tells me of the importance of setting manageable target.

What kind of goal setter are you? Ambitious? Reasonable? Not a target setter?
